Vernay was a small area in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It was part of the Broye district. Vernay was formed on January 1, 2006. This happened when three smaller areas, Autavaux, Forel, and Montbrelloz, joined together. The main office for Vernay was in Forel.
Later, on January 1, 2017, Vernay joined with several other areas. These included Bussy, Estavayer-le-Lac, Morens, Murist, Rueyres-les-Prés, and Vuissens. All these areas became part of a new, larger municipality called Estavayer.

Vernay covered about 8.3 square kilometers (3.2 square miles) of land. Most of this land was used for farming. About 75% of Vernay's land was farmland. Forests covered about 18% of the area. The rest of the land, about 5.5%, had buildings and roads. A very small part, less than 1%, was rivers or lakes.

Most people in Vernay spoke French. About 94% of the population used French as their main language. German was the second most common language, spoken by about 4% of people. A small number, about 1%, spoke Italian.
