Making Forky: How He Was Created
When the movie makers were thinking of names for Forky, the director Josh Cooley asked his four-year-old son. He showed his son a picture of the character. Cooley's son suggested "ForkFace."
Cooley thought this was a great idea. He said his son was about the same age as Bonnie. His son also didn't know what a spork was. This made the name "Forky" feel very real, like a kid would truly name him that.
What Forky Looks Like
Forky is a white plastic spork. He has two different-sized googly eyes. His mouth is made from blue plasticine. His arms and hands are red pipe cleaners. He also has a red plasticine unibrow.
For his feet, Forky has two halves of a popsicle stick. These are stuck on with modelling clay. Bonnie wrote her name on the bottom of his feet. He also has a rainbow sticker on his left foot.
Forky's Personality
Forky is a very innocent character. At first, he thinks he is "trash." He believes he belongs in the trash can. This idea slowly changes after he becomes friends with Woody and the other toys.
Even after making friends, Forky stays a bit naive. He is very curious but sometimes a little silly.
Forky's Adventures and Appearances
Toy Story 4 Movie Role
Forky first appears during Bonnie's kindergarten orientation. Woody helps Bonnie find parts from the trash bin for a craft project. This is how Bonnie creates Forky. When Woody and Forky return home in Bonnie's backpack, Forky comes to life!
Woody introduces Forky to the other toys. But Forky is sure he's just trash, not a toy. He keeps trying to find the nearest trash bin.
During a family road trip, Forky escapes from the RV. He ends up on a highway, which scares Woody. Woody chases after him. Woody tries to convince Forky that he is Bonnie's toy. They pass an antique store where Woody sees Bo Peep's lamp.
Woody and Forky meet a talking doll named Gabby Gabby. She says she knows where Bo Peep is. Woody feels something is wrong and tries to escape. Gabby Gabby's bodyguards, the Bensons (who are ventriloquist dummys), capture Forky. While held by Gabby, Forky innocently shares stories Woody told him about Andy.
Later, Woody finds Bo Peep at a playground. He asks her to help rescue Forky from Gabby Gabby. Bo Peep agrees, and they plan a rescue. Buzz Lightyear, Duke Caboom, Giggle McDimples, and Ducky and Bunny join them. The rescue mission fails. Woody and Bo Peep argue, and Woody says Forky is all he has left. Woody and the other toys go their separate ways.
Woody then confronts Gabby Gabby alone. He learns that Gabby wants a child to love her. Woody and Gabby make a deal. Woody gives up his voice box for Forky's freedom.
Woody is about to get into Bonnie's backpack. But Forky calls him back. They see Gabby Gabby meet a girl named Harmony. Harmony rejects Gabby, making Gabby sad. Woody doesn't want Gabby to be unhappy. He convinces her to become one of Bonnie's toys.
Woody asks Forky to get Buzz and Bonnie's other toys. They mess with the RV's controls. This makes Bonnie's dad drive back to the carnival. At the carnival, Gabby Gabby sees a lost, crying girl. She decides to become that child's toy instead. Gabby helps the child find her parents. Forky then helps the toys by locking Bonnie and her parents out of the RV. This gives the toys time to meet Bo Peep and Woody.
At the carousel, Woody and Bo say a sad goodbye. Woody decides to stay with Bo. They will live a new life finding homes for lost toys. Forky says goodbye to Woody. The RV leaves with Bonnie's toys. Woody and Bo start their new life.
In a scene after the credits, Bonnie makes a new toy. It's a female toy made from a plastic knife. Bonnie names her Karen Beverly. Karen Beverly also thinks she is trash, just like Forky did. Forky is very interested in her. He promises to answer all her questions. When Karen asks how she is alive, Forky simply says, "I don't know."
