Four Lakes is a small community in Spokane County, Washington, United States. It's located southwest of the city of Spokane and north of Cheney. In 2010, about 512 people lived there.

Two major roads, Interstate 90 and SR 904, meet in Four Lakes. The community was started in 1879 by G.H. Morgan. It got its name because there were four lakes nearby. One of these lakes is now thought to be a marsh.

Life in Four Lakes

Four Lakes is mostly a quiet place where people live and then travel to nearby towns for work. These towns include Cheney and Spokane.

Local Businesses and Services

There are not many businesses in Four Lakes. You can find a hair salon, a tavern, and a place to groom dogs. There is also a convenience store. Many of these businesses have been in Four Lakes for a long time.

Farms are also common around the community. Four Lakes has its own post office. It also has a water district and a volunteer fire department.

Schools in Four Lakes

From 1917 to 1959, Four Lakes had its own school for students in first through eighth grade. This school later joined the Cheney School District.

Today, most younger students in Four Lakes go to Betz Elementary. Older students attend either Cheney High School or Cheney Middle School. A small number of high school students might go to Three Springs High School in Cheney.

The Battle of Four Lakes

The Battle of Four Lakes was an important fight during the Coeur d'Alene War in 1858. This war took place in what was then the Washington Territory. Today, this area includes parts of the states of Washington and Idaho. The Coeur d'Alene War was actually a part of a bigger conflict called the Yakima War, which started in 1855.

This battle happened near a place now known as Four Lakes, Washington. It was fought between the United States Army and a group of Native American tribes. These tribes included the Schitsu'umsh (Coeur d'Alene), Palus, Spokan, and Yakama warriors.

Climate and Weather

Four Lakes has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are usually warm to hot, and sometimes humid. Winters are cold, and can be very cold.
