Frances Bean Cobain (born August 18, 1992) is an American visual artist and model. She is the only child of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love. She helps manage the rights to her father's name and image.

Early Life and Family

Frances Bean Cobain was born on August 18, 1992, in Los Angeles, California. She was named after Frances McKee, a guitarist from the band The Vaselines. Famous singer Michael Stipe from R.E.M. and actress Drew Barrymore are her godparents.

A picture from Cobain's sonogram was even featured on the cover of Nirvana's 1992 song "Lithium".

Frances's early life had some challenges. She was briefly cared for by others when she was very young. Sadly, her father, Kurt Cobain, passed away when she was only two years old. She was then raised mainly by her mother, aunts, and paternal grandmother.

Later, as a young adult, Frances attended Bard College, where she focused on studying art.

Career Highlights

Frances Bean Cobain has explored different creative paths, including modeling and creating art.

Modeling Work

In August 2006, Frances was featured in Elle UK magazine. She wore her father's famous brown cardigan and pajama pants for the article. She explained that her father wore those pajamas when he married her mother in Hawaii.

In February 2008, she appeared in Harper's Bazaar magazine. She also modeled for Hedi Slimane in a photo series released in 2011. In 2016, she was in a spread for Schön! magazine. In 2017, she became the face of Marc Jacobs's Spring/Summer fashion campaign.

Artistic Creations

In July 2010, Frances Cobain showed her first collection of artwork. It was called Scumfuck and she used the name "Fiddle Tim" for it. The art was displayed at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles.

On August 4, 2012, she took part in a group art show called 'MiXTAPE'. For this show, artists chose a song and created art inspired by it. Frances chose the song "Black" by The Jesus and Mary Chain.

In June 2017, Frances and artist Lindsey Way had a joint art exhibition. It was called "Ghosts For Sale" and was held at Gallery 30 South in Pasadena.

Other Projects

When she was 13, Frances helped choose the title and cover photo for the 2005 Nirvana album Sliver: The Best of the Box. She also worked as an intern for Rolling Stone magazine in 2008.

Frances has turned down acting roles in popular movies. She reportedly said no to playing Alice in Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland (2010). She also turned down the part of Bella Swan in Twilight.

She was a guest singer on the song "My Space" from the album Evelyn Evelyn in 2010. She was one of many artists whose voices were mixed together for the song.

Frances was also an executive producer for the HBO movie about her father, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. However, she later said the film's portrayal of her father was not what she had hoped for. In 2019, she was a special guest judge on an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season 4.

Personal Life

In September 2005, Frances Cobain gave her first interview to Teen Vogue magazine. She talked about her personal style and mentioned her parents.

In 2009, her paternal grandmother and her father's sister were appointed as her temporary guardians. This was a legal step to ensure her well-being.

On her 18th birthday, August 18, 2010, Frances inherited a part of her late father's estate. She gained control over the rights to her father's name and image. Financial details from her divorce proceedings later showed she earned a significant amount each month from royalties related to her father's estate.

Frances has mentioned that she prefers music from bands like Oasis and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. She has said she likes the Nirvana songs "Territorial Pissings" and "Dumb".

In July 2018, Frances attended the opening of "Growing Up Kurt Cobain." This was an exhibition at the Museum of Style Icons in Ireland. She was there with her paternal grandmother and aunt.

Marriages

Frances Cobain married Isaiah Silva, the lead singer of The Eeries, on June 29, 2014. They later divorced in November 2017.

In 2021, Frances began dating skateboarder Riley Hawk. Riley is the son of famous skateboarder Tony Hawk. Frances and Riley got married in Los Angeles on October 7, 2023. Her godfather, Michael Stipe, officiated the ceremony. The couple welcomed their son, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, on September 17, 2024.
