Gainesville is a small town in Sumter County, Alabama, in the United States. It was started in 1832 and became an official town in 1835. In 2010, about 208 people lived there. An important event happened here at the end of the American Civil War. A Confederate general named Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered his soldiers near Gainesville on May 19, 1865.
