Egerton, pronounced "edgerton", is a friendly village in the northern part of Bolton, a large town in Greater Manchester, England. It's about three miles north of Bolton and 12 miles northwest of Manchester city centre. The village is nestled within the beautiful West Pennine Moors, a great place for outdoor adventures.

Discovering Egerton's Past
Egerton started as a small farming area called Walmsley. It was part of a bigger area known as Turton. The name Egerton arrived in 1663. This happened when a man named Ralph Egerton married into the Walmsley family. Their property then became known as "Egerton's."
How Egerton Grew
The village really started to grow in the 1830s. This was when two brothers, Henry and Edmund Ashworth, built cotton mills here. These mills brought jobs and more people to the area. Egerton was part of the Turton Urban District until 1974. After that, it became part of Bolton in Greater Manchester.

To the west of Egerton, you'll find a natural wonder called Gale Clough and Shooterslee Wood. This area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it's a very important place for nature.

The site covers about 8.6 hectares (or 21 acres). It's special because of its broad-leaved woodland. This type of forest is one of the most important in all of Greater Manchester. It's a fantastic place to see local wildlife and plants.
