Geddington is a charming village in North Northamptonshire, England. It is located between the towns of Kettering and Corby. In 2011, about 1,500 people lived here. The village's name might mean "farm connected to Gaete" or "goat place farm."

Historic Geddington

Geddington is famous for its rich history. It has an ancient stone cross and was once home to a royal hunting lodge.

The Eleanor Cross

One of the most special things in Geddington is the Eleanor cross. This amazing monument was built in 1294. It was created by King Edward I to remember his wife, Eleanor of Castile.

Queen Eleanor passed away in 1290. King Edward I had 12 crosses built along her funeral route. These crosses marked each place where her coffin rested on its way to Westminster Abbey.

Today, only three of these original Eleanor crosses still stand. The Geddington cross is one of them. The other two are in Hardingstone and Waltham Cross. Many people think the Geddington cross is the best preserved of them all.

Royal Hunting Lodge

Geddington was once home to a royal hunting lodge. Kings and queens used this lodge as a base. From here, they would go hunting in the large Rockingham Royal Forest.

The original lodge building is no longer standing. However, a special part of it remains. Inside the village church, St Mary Magdalene, Geddington, there is a "King's Door." This was the private entrance for the King when he stayed at the lodge.

Medieval Bridge

The old main road through Geddington crosses the River Ise. It does so over a spectacular medieval bridge. This bridge was built way back in 1250.

The bridge has five arches and three special areas. These areas are called "pedestrian refuges" and are for people walking. A more modern ford also runs next to the bridge.

Boxing Day Squirt

The village is known for a fun annual event. It's called the Boxing Day Squirt. During this event, a barrel is tied to a rope across the river. Fire crews from Geddington and Kettering compete. They use water hoses to squirt the barrel from one side of the ford to the other!

Village Life

Geddington has two local pubs. They are called The Star Inn and The White Hart. The village does not have a general shop. The small post office and newsagents is also no longer open.

Getting Around

The closest main train station is Kettering railway station. It is about 4.1 miles (6.6 km) from the village. Corby railway station is also nearby, about 5.1 miles (8.2 km) away.

There is a cycle path from Geddington to Kettering. It also goes to the village of Weekley. However, crossing the road at Weekley can be difficult. This means cycling is not used as much as it could be.
