Gemel Smith (born April 16, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays as a forward. He is currently a free agent, meaning he can sign with any team.
Smith recently played for the Bridgeport Islanders in the American Hockey League (AHL). He has also played in the top league, the National Hockey League (NHL). His NHL teams included the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and Tampa Bay Lightning. The Dallas Stars picked him in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Gemel Smith's Hockey Journey
Starting in Junior Hockey
Gemel Smith began his hockey career playing for youth teams. He played for the Markham Majors and then the North York Rangers. In 2010, the Owen Sound Attack picked him for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). This is a major junior league for young players.
In his first OHL season (2010–11), he scored 16 points in 66 games. He continued to play well for the Attack. Later, he joined the London Knights to finish his junior career.
Joining the Pros: AHL and NHL Debut
After his time in the OHL, the Dallas Stars signed Smith in 2014. He started playing professionally in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played for the Texas Stars, which is Dallas's minor league team. In his first year (2014–15), he scored 10 goals and 27 points.
In the 2016–17 season, Smith got his first chance to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). He joined the Dallas Stars on October 22, 2016. He scored his first two NHL goals on November 6, 2016, against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Moving Between Teams
The Dallas Stars re-signed Smith for a few more seasons. He played 46 games in the 2017–18 season, scoring 11 points. In December 2018, the Boston Bruins claimed him. He played a few games for Boston. Then, he was sent to their AHL team, the Providence Bruins. He had a strong season there, scoring 40 points in 47 games.
In 2019, Smith became a free agent. He then signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was part of their training camp for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Later Career and International Play
After winning championships with the Lightning, Smith faced some injuries. In January 2022, the Detroit Red Wings claimed him. He also played for their AHL team, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Later that season, the Lightning reclaimed him.
For the 2022–23 season, Smith played for the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL. He was a top scorer for them. He was then loaned to the Henderson Silver Knights, another AHL team.
In 2023, Smith decided to play in Europe. He signed with HC Dinamo Minsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He later moved to another KHL team, Kunlun Red Star.
In October 2024, Smith returned to North America. He signed a tryout contract with the Syracuse Crunch again. He then joined the Bridgeport Islanders in December 2024.

Gemel Smith comes from a Jamaican family. His younger brother, Givani Smith, is also a professional hockey player. Givani was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2016. He currently plays for the Colorado Avalanche.
Overcoming Challenges
During the 2018–19 NHL season, Gemel Smith faced some personal challenges. He had trouble sleeping and felt very down. While playing for the Boston Bruins, his teammate Patrice Bergeron encouraged him to get help. Smith sought support and worked through these difficulties.
