Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum (born August 4, 1899 – died February 7, 1978) was a famous poet from the 20th century. He was also known by his pen name, Tabassum.
He is most famous for writing many poems especially for children. He created the popular character Tot Batot. He also translated many poems from Persian into Punjabi and Urdu languages.

Early Life and Education
Sufi Tabassum was born on August 4, 1899, in Amritsar, which was part of British India at the time. His family had roots in Kashmir.
He studied at Forman Christian College (FCC) in Lahore, Pakistan. There, he earned a master's degree in the Persian language.
Career as a Professor and Writer
Sufi Tabassum spent his whole career working at Government College Lahore. He started there and eventually became the head of the Persian Studies Department in 1943. He retired from the college in 1954.
He was also part of a group of writers and poets called Niazmandan-i-Lahore. This group included many important Pakistani writers like Patras Bokhari and Hafeez Jalandhari. Sufi Tabassum also worked for Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television. He even edited a magazine called Lail-o-Nahar for some time.
In Pakistan, he is seen as a pioneer, meaning a very important early figure, in children's poetry. His well-known poems for kids include Totbatot and Jhoolnay.
His Poetry on Radio and TV
For fifty years, Sufi Tabassum was very active on Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television. His poems were often used as lyrics for songs. Famous singers like Noor Jehan, Farida Khanum, and Ghulam Ali sang his words.

- "Sau Baar Chaman Mehka, Sau Baar Bahar Aaee" sung by Naseem Begum.
- "Aye Puttar Hattan Tay Nahin Vikday" sung by Noor Jehan. This was a patriotic song during the 1965 war.
- "Who Mujh Say Huay Ham Kalam Allah Allah" sung by Farida Khanum.
- "Meray Shauq Da Nahin Aetbar Teinun" sung by Ghulam Ali.
- "Meray Dhol Sipaya Teinun Rab Dian Rakhhaan" sung by Noor Jehan and later redone by Shehzad Roy. This was another patriotic song from the 1965 war.
Awards and Recognition
Sufi Tabassum received several important awards for his work:
- In 1962, he was given the Pride of Performance Award by the President of Pakistan.
- In 1966, he received the Tamgha-e-Nishan-e-Sipaas award from the Government of Iran.
- He was also honored with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz Award (Star of Excellence) by the President of Pakistan.
