Early Life and Education
Hafeez Jalandhari was born in Jalandhar, which was part of British India at the time. His father, Shams-ud-Din, was a Hafiz-e-Qur'an, meaning he had memorized the entire Quran.
Hafeez started his schooling in a mosque and then went to a local school. However, he only studied formally until the seventh grade. Even with limited schooling, he had a natural talent and love for poetry. He learned a lot about poetry from his teacher, Maulana Qadir Gharami.
After Pakistan became an independent country in 1947, Jalandhari moved to Lahore, Pakistan.
Literary Journey
From 1922 to 1929, Jalandhari worked as an editor for several monthly magazines. These included Nonehal, Hazar Dastaan, Teehzeeb-e-Niswan, and Makhzin. His first collection of poems, called Nagma-e-Zar, was published in 1935.
During and after World War II, he worked for the government's Song Publicity Department. In this role, he wrote many songs to help spread important messages.
Role in Pakistan Movement
Hafeez Jalandhari was very active in the Pakistan Movement. This was the effort to create an independent Pakistan. He used his writing to inspire people and support the idea of a new country.
In early 1948, he joined the forces fighting for the freedom of Kashmir. He was even wounded during this time. He wrote the Kashmiri Anthem, "Watan Hamara Azad Kashmir," which became very popular. He also wrote many patriotic songs during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.
Government Roles and Famous Works
Jalandhari held important positions in the government. He served as the Director General of morals in the Pakistan Armed Forces. Later, he became an adviser to the President, Mohammad Ayub Khan. He was also a director for the Writers Guild of Pakistan.
One of his most famous works is Shahnam-e-Islam. This long poem tells the glorious history of Islam in verse, much like the famous Persian epic Shahnameh by Ferdowsi.
In 1949, the Government of Pakistan formed a committee to choose a national anthem. Many poets submitted their work, but Hafeez Jalandhari's lyrics were chosen. The music for this anthem was composed by Ahmed Ghulamali Chagla.
Jalandhari was known for the beautiful melody and rhythm in his poetry. His poems often explored themes of love, religion, patriotism, and nature. He used a mix of Hindi and Urdu words, showing the rich culture of South Asia. One of his well-known poems, 'Abhi Toh Mein Jawan Hoon', was sung by the famous singer Malika Pukhraj in the 1950s and is still loved today. Although he was a devout Muslim, he also wrote a poem called Krishn Kanhaiya, praising the Hindu god Krishna.
