Starting Out in Greece
Karagounis began his professional journey in 1996. He joined Apollon Smyrnis on loan from Panathinaikos. Even in his first few years, he showed great energy and skill in midfield. He also proved he could score goals. After two seasons, he returned to Panathinaikos in 1998. This was the club where he had learned to play.
For the next five years, he was a regular player for Panathinaikos. Even though the team didn't win the league title, they were always strong contenders. Karagounis scored important goals in European competitions. For example, in the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League, he played in all 12 games. He scored a memorable free kick goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The next season, he scored a great header against Arsenal at home. This helped his team reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Playing in Italy with Inter Milan

Fulham released Karagounis at the end of the 2012–13 season. However, he wanted to return. On July 9, 2013, he signed a new one-year deal with Fulham.
