Gitanas Nausėda (born on May 19, 1964) is a Lithuanian politician and economist. He is currently the ninth president of Lithuania, serving since 2019.
On December 7, 2023, Nausėda announced he would run for president again. He was re-elected for a second term on May 26, 2024.

Early Life and Education
Gitanas Nausėda was born in Klaipėda, a port city in Lithuania, on May 19, 1964. He went to Klaipėda 5th Secondary School. He also attended the Klaipėda Music School, where he sang in a boys' choir called "Gintarėlis."
After finishing secondary school, he moved to Vilnius. From 1982 to 1987, he studied Industrial Economics at Vilnius University. He continued his studies in Economics as a post-graduate student until 1989.
From 1990 to 1992, he studied in Germany at the University of Mannheim. He received a scholarship for this study. In 1993, he earned his PhD with a thesis on "Income Policy Under Inflation and Stagflation."
After returning to Lithuania, he worked for the Lithuanian Competition Council. Since 2009, he has also been a professor at Vilnius University Business School.
Professional Career
After his studies, Nausėda worked in economics and finance. From 1992 to 1993, he worked at the Research Institute for Economics and Privatization.
He then worked at the Lithuanian Competition Council from 1993 to 1994. After that, he joined the Bank of Lithuania from 1994 to 2000. There, he helped regulate banks and worked in monetary policy.
From 2000 to 2008, he was a chief economist and advisor at AB Vilniaus Bankas. Later, from 2008 to 2018, he worked as a financial analyst and chief economist for SEB bankas.
In 2004, he supported the election campaign of former Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus.
Presidency (2019–present)


On September 17, 2018, Nausėda announced he would run for president. He ran in the 2019 Lithuanian presidential election. In the first round, he was just behind former Finance Minister Ingrida Šimonytė. However, he won the second round with 66 percent of the votes.
He officially became president on July 12, 2019. Shortly after, he asked Saulius Skvernelis to continue as Prime Minister. After only a month in office, polls showed that Nausėda was the most trusted politician in Lithuania.
Personal Life
Gitanas Nausėda's father, Antanas Nausėda, was an engineer. His mother, Stasė Nausėdienė, was a physics and mathematics teacher. He has a sister named Vilija, who is an economist.
In 1990, he married Diana Nausėdienė. They have two daughters together. Besides his native Lithuanian, Gitanas Nausėda also speaks German, English, and Russian. Since 1997, he has enjoyed collecting antique books.
