History of Glen Allen
Glen Allen was first called "Mountain Road Crossing." This name came about when train service started there in 1836. The area later got its name from a local landowner, Mrs. Benjamin Allen, who had a homestead there.
One of the most famous people to live in Glen Allen was Captain John Cussons. He was originally from England. During the Civil War, he was a scout for the Confederate side. After the war, Captain Cussons moved to Glen Allen. He started a very successful printing company. He also built a fancy hotel called Forest Lodge right next to the train tracks.
Glen Allen used to be mostly farms and open land. Today, it has grown into a busy suburb of Richmond.
Geography and Location
Glen Allen is located in the northern part of Henrico County. It is about 11 miles (18 km) north-northwest of downtown Richmond.
The community covers about 8.8 square miles (22.9 square kilometers) of land. A very small part, about 0.07 square miles (0.18 square kilometers), is water.
Borders of Glen Allen
The Chickahominy River forms the northern border of Glen Allen. This river also separates Henrico County from Hanover County. To the east, Interstate 95 forms the border, running south from the river to East Parham Road.
The southern border follows several roads, including East Parham Road and U.S. Route 1. It also follows a railroad line for a bit. The western border follows roads like Hungary Spring Road and U.S. Route 33. It also follows a power line and the railroad line.
