About the Show
In each episode, Jeff Corwin traveled to amazing natural places around the world. He visited places like Florida, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Hawaii. His main goal was to find wild animals. Jeff always looked for a special animal called the "Feature Creature." He would always find it by the end of the show!
To help him find animals, Jeff looked for "Creature Clues." These clues helped him track down animals like manatees, cobras, crocodiles, and bears. Sometimes, Jeff also explored ancient ruins. He visited places like Gila Cliff Dwellings and Ayutthaya.
Where Jeff Traveled
The show had two seasons with many episodes. Jeff visited a huge variety of places. In Season 1 (1997), he explored locations like Belize, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and the Everglades National Park in Florida. He also went to South Africa and Kenya.
Season 2 (1998–1999) took him to even more exciting spots. He visited Borneo, Olympic National Park in Washington, and Costa Rica. Jeff also traveled to Australia, Death Valley National Park in California, and Alaska. Each trip brought new adventures and different animals to discover.
How They Filmed the Show
Jeff and his team filmed in some of the most amazing places on Earth. They often filmed in special wildlife parks. This helped them get close to the animals safely. Sometimes, local people helped Jeff find his "Feature Creature." They would give him hints about where to look.
The time it took to film an episode changed a lot. In Death Valley, they filmed for only two days. But in South Africa, they spent three months capturing all the footage!
Meeting the Animals
Most of the animals Jeff filmed were wild. They were living freely in their natural homes. However, some animals were borrowed from museums or nature parks. For example, the cougar cubs shown in South Dakota were actually being released back into the wild. They were part of a wildlife rescue program.
The show always made sure to state that "No Animals Were Harmed During The Making of This Program." It also mentioned that "Some Animal Situations Have Been Recreated." This means sometimes they might have shown an animal in a way that looked like it was filmed in the wild, but it was actually in a controlled setting. Finding animals was not always easy. Jeff once spent three hours on a surfboard looking for pelicans in Los Angeles!
Close Calls with Wild Animals
Jeff Corwin had some exciting close calls while filming. In South Africa, a leopard once came very close to him. Jeff stood his ground with a stick, and the leopard eventually walked away. He also wrote in his journals that an African lion jumped on him and pawed his head!
In Alaska, Jeff was almost run over by a moose. And in Thailand, he had to dodge strikes from a dangerous king cobra. These moments show how wild and unpredictable nature can be!
