Goleen (which means An Góilín in Irish) is a small village in County Cork, located on the very south-western tip of Ireland. Most people in Goleen work in farming, tourism, or construction.

Where is Goleen Located?

Goleen is found at the south-western end of the Mizen Peninsula in West Cork. The land around the village is quite hilly and rocky. This means it's not the best for farming.

Mizen Head and Brow Head

Mizen Head, which is about five miles from Goleen, is often thought to be the most southerly point in Ireland. However, it's actually the most south-westerly point. The true most southerly point is nearby Brow Head. At Brow Head, a famous inventor named Guglielmo Marconi did some important experiments. He worked on sending radio signals across the Atlantic Ocean in the early 1900s.

What Can You Find in Goleen?

Goleen has a few useful places for locals and visitors. You can find a small shop and a petrol station there.

Sports and Community Life

The village has a community pitch where people play sports. Locals enjoy playing Gaelic football and soccer on this field. There is also a sports hall next to the pitch. Inside, you can find a table tennis club, which is a fun way to stay active.

Churches in Goleen

Goleen has a large Roman Catholic church. It is named after Our Lady, Star of the Sea and St. Patrick. There is also a smaller Church of Ireland church just outside the village. This church is no longer used for services. Instead, it is now a place where someone makes sails.

History of the Main Church

The main Catholic church in Goleen was built a long time ago. Work started in 1852, not long after the Great Famine. The local priest, John Foley, got help from Irish people who had moved away. The church was built in a Neo-Gothic style. It has a special shape like a cross and a large window behind the altar. The church was officially opened on October 11, 1854.
