Gorontalo (called Hulontalo in the Gorontaloan language) is a province in Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sulawesi, specifically on the Minahasa Peninsula. Gorontalo became its own separate province on December 5, 2000. Before that, it was part of North Sulawesi province. The main city and capital of Gorontalo is Gorontalo City.

Like many Indonesian provinces, Islam is the main religion in Gorontalo. Islam arrived in Gorontalo in the 15th century. It came from the areas of Ternate and Bone. Important Islamic groups like Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah have offices here.
Christians make up the second-largest group of people in Gorontalo. Most Christians moved here from North Sulawesi and other parts of Indonesia. They are about 2.19% of the population. You can find several churches in Gorontalo.
