Grône is a cool town, also called a municipality, located in the Sierre area of Valais, a canton in Switzerland. It's a place with a mix of history and nature!

History of Grône

Grône was first mentioned a long, long time ago, between the years 1001 and 1100. Back then, it was known as in Gruona. It also used to have a German name, Grün, but people don't use that name anymore.

Geography and Nature in Grône

Grône covers an area of about 21.1 square kilometers (which is about 8.1 square miles). A big part of this land is covered by forests, about 64% of it! About 19% of the land is used for farming. The rest of the land is where buildings and roads are, or it's rivers, lakes, or rocky areas.

The main part of Grône is in the Rhone valley. But there are also about ten smaller villages, called hamlets, up in the hills. Some of these hamlets are Loye, Daillet, Itravers, and Erdesson. Erdesson used to be called Merdesson. Its name changed after a big fire in 1912, when it was rebuilt.

Long ago, the main village of Grône was often flooded by the Rhone river. Because of this, the hamlets in the hills were very important places for people to live. Did you know that in 1292, both Grône and Loye were separate municipalities?

Grône's Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is like a special symbol or logo for a town or family. Grône's coat of arms shows a silver Ibex (a type of wild goat) standing on green hills, all on a blue background. It's a proud symbol for the municipality!
