History of Grand Ridge

Grand Ridge was founded in 1882 by a man named John Thomas Porter. He was a judge who moved to Florida from Illinois. He named the new town "Grand Ridge" to remember his old home in Grand Ridge, Illinois.

John T. Porter was involved in the lumber business in Florida. He also owned a newspaper called the West Florida Echo. This newspaper was known for supporting the Republican Party in the early 1900s. His son, Ebenezer F. Porter, later became a politician in Kansas.

Even though the town was started in 1882, it didn't become an official town (a "municipality") until 1951. This means it gained its own local government at that time.
