History of Grandin
Grandin got its name from John Livingston Grandin. He was a "bonanza farmer." A bonanza farm was a very large farm, often thousands of acres big. John and his brother, William James, bought a huge amount of land in the Red River Valley. They divided it into many 1,500-acre farms.
Near Grandin, the brothers farmed about 14,000 acres. They also had another 600 acres near Mayville, North Dakota. Before railroads arrived, they shipped their wheat. They used barges on the Red River to send it to Fargo. This was about 90 miles away. Their barges were pulled by steamers named Alsop and Grandin. The Grandin brothers' farm was one of the first in North Dakota to use the telephone. John L. Grandin's great-granddaughter is Temple Grandin. She is a well-known animal scientist, author, and advocate for people with autism.
