Great Coum is a cool hill located in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales area of England. Even though it's part of the Yorkshire Dales, it's actually found in a place called South Lakeland in Cumbria. It's a popular spot for hikers and people who love exploring the outdoors!

What is Great Coum?

Great Coum stands tall at 687 meters (about 2,254 feet) above sea level. It's not the biggest mountain around, but it's still quite a climb! The very top of the hill is in a parish called Dent, but the border of another parish, Casterton, also crosses the summit. This means you could be standing in two different places at once!

Great Coum has some interesting neighbours. These include other hills like Crag Hill, Green Hill, and Gragareth.

How to Explore Great Coum

If you want to climb Great Coum, there are a couple of ways to do it. One way is to start your adventure from the village of Dent to the north. This route might be a bit longer.

Another way, which is shorter, is to take a path from a small road near White Shaw Moss (you can find it at grid reference SD723821). This shorter route is about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long and involves climbing about 700 feet (213 meters). It's a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the amazing views!

How is Great Coum Classified?

Hills and mountains are often put into different groups based on their height and how much they stand out from the land around them. Great Coum is special because it belongs to several of these groups!

It's known as a:

  • Marilyn: This means it's a hill in the British Isles that has a "prominence" of at least 150 meters (492 feet). Prominence is how much a hill rises above the lowest point connecting it to a higher peak.
  • Hewitt: This stands for "Hills of England, Wales and Ireland with a Top" and means it's a hill over 2,000 feet (610 meters) high.
  • Nuttall: This is another list of hills in England and Wales that are over 2,000 feet high.
  • HuMP: This means "Hundred Metre Prominence," so it's a hill with at least 100 meters of prominence.
  • Simm: This is for hills in the British Isles that are at least 600 meters (1,969 feet) high and have at least 30 meters (98 feet) of prominence.
  • It's also on lists by Buxton & Lewis, Bridge, and Clem, which are other ways people classify hills and mountains.

Being on so many lists shows that Great Coum is a significant and interesting hill for climbers and map enthusiasts!
