Great Strickland is a small village in a beautiful area of England called the Eden Valley. This valley is nestled between the tall Cumbrian mountains to the west and the Pennines hills to the east. It's about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south-east of a bigger town called Penrith. Great Strickland used to be part of an old county called Westmorland. In 2011, when people counted everyone living there, Great Strickland, along with two nearby places called Little Strickland and Thrimby, had a total population of 370 people.
Exploring Great Strickland
The village has a lovely church built in 1872. It's made of sandstone and is named after Saint Barnabas. It has a special small tower called a bell turret where the church bell hangs.
To the west of Great Strickland, you'll find the River Leith, which is a small river. You can also see the West Coast Main Line, a busy railway track, and the M6 Motorway. To the south of the village is the smaller settlement of Little Strickland.

History of Great Strickland
The name of the village comes from an old Scandinavian word. This word was used around the 9th and 10th centuries to describe land used for grazing animals, like a pasture.
In 1179, a local noblewoman named Christian de Leteham got married. She married a man named Walter de Castlecarrock. After they were married, Walter changed his last name to de Strikeland. This is how the family name became connected to the village.
