The Green River is a river in the United States. It is the largest branch of the North Fork Toutle River. This river is found in the state of Washington.

The Green River flows near Mount St. Helens. This mountain is part of the Cascade Range. The river travels about 37.4 miles (60.2 km) west. It goes through the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It also flows through areas with many trees used for timber. The river collects water from over 130 square miles (340 km2) of land. This area covers parts of three counties in Washington. These counties are Skamania, Lewis, and Cowlitz.

The upper part of the Green River was greatly changed. This happened because of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Many other rivers in the Toutle River and Cowlitz River systems were also affected.

Green River's Journey

The Green River starts from melting snow. It begins on the other side of a hill from Spirit Lake. This area is inside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It is located in Skamania County.

At first, the river flows north. Then it turns northwest. This happens after it joins with Grizzly Creek. The river then turns west. It flows into Lewis County. After that, it goes back south into Skamania County. Almost right away, it enters Cowlitz County.

Two smaller streams join the Green River. Shultz Creek flows in from the left side. Devils Creek joins from the right side. Finally, the Green River flows into the North Fork Toutle River. This meeting point is near the town of Toutle.
