Greenbush is a small city in Roseau County, Minnesota, in the United States. It's known for its friendly community. In 2020, about 682 people lived there. Main roads like Highway 11 and Highway 32 help people get around Greenbush.

History of Greenbush

The name "Greenbush" comes from the Ojibwe word "Sha Ach Wah." This word means "spruce tree" or "green bush."

Early Settlers Arrive

In the 1880s, people from Scandinavia, Poland, and Bohemia started settling in the area. Many more arrived in the early 1890s. The Homestead Act helped these settlers. It gave them 160 acres (0.65 square kilometers) of land for free. To get the land, they had to build a home and farm some of the land.

Moving the Town

The first Greenbush was built on a ridge. This ridge was once the shore of an ancient lake called Lake Agassiz. This old village is now called "Old Greenbush." You can still see where it was by the Hvidso cemetery, also known as Pioneer Haven, along Highway 11.

In 1904, the Great Northern railroad came to the area. It stopped building tracks at the spot where Greenbush is today. The businesses in Old Greenbush decided to move. They moved their shops and buildings to the new town, which was called "West Greenbush." They moved the buildings by rolling them on logs, pulled by horses. It's amazing that the businesses stayed open even while they were moving!

A few years later, the railroad line was finished. It went all the way to Warroad and passed right through the old town site.

Greenbush Becomes a City

Greenbush officially became a city in 1905. At that time, about 450 people lived there. Volunteers had to walk about 85 miles (137 kilometers) to Crookston to deliver the official city documents. That's a long walk!
