Greg Robinson grew up in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He went to Thibodaux High School. There, he was a top lineman for the school's football team. He earned "all-state" honors twice.
Interestingly, Greg didn't play on the offensive line until his junior year. Before that, he played on the defensive line. After his senior year, he was chosen to play in the important U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Greg's Athletic Talents
Besides football, Greg was also a great athlete in track and field. He was one of the best in Louisiana at the shot put event. In 2010, he threw the discus 43.48 meters, coming in second place at a local event.
In 2011, he won the shot put at another high school competition. His best throw was 18.26 meters. Experts like Rivals.com thought he was a top prospect. They ranked him as the second-best guard in the country.
College Football Career at Auburn
Greg Robinson started his college football journey at Auburn University. In 2011, he was a "redshirt" player. This means he practiced with the team but didn't play in games. It allowed him to train and get stronger.
In 2012, he became the starting left tackle for Auburn. He started 11 games that season. By 2013, as a sophomore, he was recognized as one of the best. He was named to the first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) team.
Professional Football Journey
Greg Robinson was a highly sought-after player in the NFL Draft. He was known for his strength and athleticism.
Playing for the Rams
In the 2014 NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams picked Greg Robinson. He was the second player chosen overall in the entire draft. This made him the highest-drafted offensive lineman ever from Auburn University.
On June 16, 2014, Greg signed a big contract with the Rams. It was a four-year deal worth over $21 million. He also received a large signing bonus.
During the 2016 season, Greg faced some challenges. He arrived at training camp a bit overweight. He started as the left tackle but struggled in games. He also received many penalties. Because of this, he was benched for a game in November 2016.
In 2017, the Rams made some changes to their offensive line. Greg was moved to play guard. Later, he was moved again to play right tackle. In May 2017, the Rams decided not to extend his contract. This meant he would become a free agent after the 2017 season.
Time with the Detroit Lions
On June 15, 2017, Greg was traded to the Detroit Lions. This trade happened because the Lions' starting left tackle was injured. Greg was brought in to help fill that spot.
However, his time with the Lions was short. He missed two games due to an ankle injury. On November 10, 2017, the Lions decided to let him go. He was then placed on the injured reserve list.
Joining the Cleveland Browns
Greg Robinson signed with the Cleveland Browns on June 19, 2018. He started the season as a backup player. But by Week 9, he became the starting left tackle. He kept that position for the rest of the season. The Browns finished the season with a record of 7 wins, 8 losses, and 1 tie.
The Browns re-signed Greg for another year on February 25, 2019. In 2019, he continued to be the starting left tackle. He played in 15 games that season. He missed one game due to a concussion.
In Week 1 of the 2019 season, Greg was ejected from a game. This happened after he kicked an opposing player. He was later fined for the incident. He also recovered a fumble in another game. He helped block for Nick Chubb, who was one of the best rushers in the league. The Browns ended the 2019 season with 6 wins and 10 losses. After this season, Greg became a free agent.
