Groton is a town in Tompkins County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 5,746 people lived there. The town's name comes from Groton, Massachusetts.
The Town of Groton includes a smaller area called the Village of Groton. The town is located in the northeast part of Tompkins County. It is also northeast of the city of Ithaca.
Groton was once home to Groton High School. This old school building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

History of Groton
Groton is located in an area that was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. This was land set aside for soldiers after the American Revolutionary War.
The town of Groton was officially formed in 1817. It was created from the Town of Locke in Cayuga County. At first, it was called the "Town of Division." Many early settlers came from New England. They decided to change the name to "Groton."
In 1888, the community of Groton became its own separate village. Groton was also where the original Corona Typewriter Company started. This company later joined with another to form Smith Corona.
Geography and Location
Groton covers a total area of about 128.4 square kilometers (49.54 square miles). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.
The town shares its northern border with Cayuga County. Its eastern border is with Cortland County. To the south, Groton borders the Town of Dryden. To the west, it borders the Town of Lansing.
Groton is part of the beautiful Finger Lakes region. This area in central New York State is known for its long, narrow lakes.
Important roads cross through Groton. New York State Route 38 runs north and south. It meets New York State Route 222 in Groton village. New York State Route 34B is another main road that runs east and west near the southern part of the town.
Population and People
As of the 2020 census, there were 5,746 people living in Groton. There were 2,372 households in the town.
Most people in Groton are White (about 88%). Other groups include African American, Native American, and Asian people. About 3.72% of the population was Hispanic or Latino. Many residents have German, English, or Irish family backgrounds.
The average age in Groton was about 39.7 years old. About 22.7% of the people were under 18 years old.
