History of Guin
Guin is named after Dr. Jeremiah Guin, a young doctor from Tuscaloosa County. In 1870, he bought a farm that used to be called Haley's Trading Post. This trading post was a country store built by Alan Haley. It was on a busy road where people drove their cattle to markets in Columbus and Aberdeen, Mississippi. Dr. Guin moved the main area of interest about a mile east from the original trading post.
In its early days, Guin had a sawmill. This mill, first known as Kenney Lumber Company, provided cut wood to the local community.
On April 3, 1974, a very strong tornado hit Guin. It was part of a huge storm system known as the 1974 Super Outbreak. Sadly, this tornado caused a lot of damage and many people lost their lives.
Later, on July 13, 2010, the people of Guin voted on an important issue. They decided to allow the sale of alcohol in their city. This made Guin the first city in Marion County to do so since the time of Prohibition.
Guin's Geography
Guin is located in the southern part of Marion County. Two major roads, U.S. Routes 43 and 278, meet in the center of the city. These roads help connect Guin to other nearby towns. For example, Hamilton, which is the county seat, is about 13 miles north. Winfield is 6 miles southeast, and Sulligent is 14 miles southwest.
The city of Guin covers about 15 square miles, and all of it is land. A stream called Purgatory Creek flows through the southern part of the city. This creek eventually leads to the Buttahatchee River, which is part of the larger Tombigbee River system.
