Gulbadin Naib (born June 4, 1991) is a talented Afghan cricket player. He is known as an "all-rounder" because he is good at both batting and bowling. He bats with his right hand and bowls fast-medium with his right arm. In April 2019, the Afghanistan Cricket Board chose Gulbadin to be the new captain of the team for One Day International (ODI) matches. This happened just before the 2019 Cricket World Cup. After the World Cup, where Afghanistan faced some tough losses, Rashid Khan became the new captain. Gulbadin also helped Afghanistan win a silver medal in cricket at the 2022 Asian Games.

Gulbadin Naib's Early Cricket Days
Gulbadin Naib was born in Puli Alam, a place in the Logar Province of Afghanistan. He started playing for the Afghan team in 2008. His first big tournament was the 2008 ICC World Cricket League Division Five, where he played five games.
Gulbadin was even part of a documentary called Out of the Ashes. This film showed how the Afghan cricket team got ready for tournaments. It also showed their lives back home. In the movie, Gulbadin is seen working out in a gym in Kabul. He even said that Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of his heroes!
After a short break from the team, he was chosen for the 2010 Asian Games. He played one match against Hong Kong. Afghanistan did very well and won the silver medal in that competition. He also played his first "List A" matches for Afghanistan. This was when Afghanistan became the first team to visit Pakistan for a cricket tour after a big event in 2009.
Gulbadin's International Cricket Journey
Gulbadin made his first One Day International (ODI) appearance in 2011 against Canada. Later that year, he played his first Twenty20 (T20) match against Trinidad and Tobago. He also played for a new team called the Afghan Cheetahs in a tournament. During this time, he scored his first "half-century" (50 runs or more) in a T20 game. He scored 68 runs from 42 balls against Faisalabad Wolves.
In December 2011, Gulbadin scored 57 runs in the final of the 2011 ACC Twenty20 Cup. This helped Afghanistan beat Hong Kong and win their third ACC Twenty20 Cup title.
Playing Against Top Teams
In February 2012, Gulbadin played in Afghanistan's first-ever ODI against a "Full Member" Test-playing nation, Pakistan. This was a big moment for Afghan cricket!
Later in 2012, Gulbadin played his first Twenty20 International (T20I) match against the Netherlands. He also played in the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier tournament. After this, he played in two ODIs against the Netherlands.
He also made his "first-class" cricket debut in 2012. This was during a tour of Ireland. In August 2012, Gulbadin played in Afghanistan's second ODI against a top team, Australia. He scored a quick 22 runs from just 17 balls, hitting three sixes!
Captaincy and World Cup Moments
In April 2019, Gulbadin was chosen to be the captain of Afghanistan's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. This was a huge honor! Just before the World Cup, in a match against Ireland, Gulbadin took six wickets for only 43 runs. This was his best bowling performance in ODIs and one of the best ever for Afghanistan.
On June 24, 2019, in a match against Bangladesh, Gulbadin played his 100th international match for Afghanistan. In the same game, he also reached 1,000 runs in ODI cricket.
Recent Achievements

In May 2024, he was again selected for Afghanistan's team for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. During a "Super 8" match against Australia, Gulbadin bowled amazingly well. He took 4 wickets for only 20 runs in his four overs. This helped Afghanistan win a historic match against Australia! He also became the first bowler in any Men's T20 World Cup or ODI World Cup to take four wickets after being the eighth bowler used in the game.
