Life of Gustaf Carlson
Early Years and Education
Gustaf Carlson was first raised by Baron Carl Gyllenhielm. Carl Gyllenhielm was also a son of a Swedish king, Charles IX of Sweden. After Carl Gyllenhielm passed away in 1650, Gustaf was raised by Samuel Enander. Samuel Enander was the Bishop of Linköping.
By 1660, after his father King Charles X Gustav died, Gustaf was looked after by the Queen dowager Hedwig Eleonora. She became his guardian. She said she did this to remember his father, the king.
Erik Lindschöld was in charge of Gustaf's studies. From 1659 to 1668, Erik Lindschöld traveled with Gustaf. They visited many countries in Europe. These included Germany, the Netherlands, England, France, and Italy.
Military Career and Service
When Gustaf turned 21 in 1667, he joined the army of the Dutch Republic. He fought in the Franco-Dutch War. This was a big war between France and the Netherlands. He returned to Sweden in 1674.
While he was away in 1673, he was made a colonel in the Uppland Regiment. During the Scanian War (1675–1679), Gustaf Carlson fought very well. He was part of the Battle of Lund. He also fought at Rügen in 1678. There, he led a regiment of soldiers.
In 1679, soldiers from Brandenburg captured him. He was sent back to Stockholm in 1680. However, he soon left Sweden. He was likely upset because he did not get a high position in the government. Also, he lost large estates like Börringe and Lindholm. These lands had been given to him by his father.
Later Life and Adventures
Gustaf Carlson then joined the Dutch army again. He became a lieutenant general. In 1685, he got married in Ameland.
He later traveled with William of Orange to England. This happened during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. He fought alongside William in the Williamite War in Ireland in 1690. He was a close friend and trusted advisor to the king.
Gustaf spent the rest of his life in the Dutch province of Friesland. He passed away in 1708 at his castle in Terherne, Boarnsterhim. He did not have any children who survived him.
Personal Life

By 1674, Gustaf was given the special title of count. His family name became Carlson. The areas of Börringe and Lindholmen were named as his counties.
He was married to Baroness Isabella-Susanna von Schwartzenberg. They had one daughter, but she sadly passed away before she could be baptized.
