Gustaf Caspar Orm Skarsgård (born 12 November 1980) is a Swedish actor. Many people know him for playing the clever shipbuilder Floki in the TV series Vikings.

He has also appeared in major movies like The Way Back (2010), Kon-Tiki (2012), and Oppenheimer (2023). On television, he played Merlin in the Netflix series Cursed and Karl Strand in the HBO show Westworld.

A Family of Actors

Gustaf Skarsgård was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His father is the famous Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, and his mother, My, is a doctor.

Acting runs in the family. Gustaf has five siblings and two half-brothers. Three of his brothers, Alexander, Bill, and Valter, are also successful actors. His godfather is another well-known Swedish actor, Peter Stormare.

Gustaf knew he wanted to be an actor when he was only six years old. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps and went to drama school to learn the craft.

Skarsgård started his acting career in 1989. His first role was in a short film called Prima Ballerina. That same year, he also appeared in the Swedish movie Codename Coq Rouge. He continued to act in roles for children and teenagers throughout the 1990s.

From 1998 to 2003, he studied at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting in Stockholm. After graduating, he joined the famous Royal Dramatic Theatre in Sweden. He performed in plays by great writers like William Shakespeare and Anton Chekhov.

Big Roles and Awards

In 2003, Skarsgård acted in the movie Evil, and in 2008, he starred in Patrik 1,5. He was nominated for the Guldbagge Award, which is like the Swedish version of the Oscars, for both roles.

He won the Guldbagge Award for Best Leading Actor for the movie Förortsungar (also known as Kidz in da Hood). In 2007, he was honored with the Shooting Stars Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, which recognizes talented young European actors.

International Fame

In 2012, Skarsgård became famous worldwide when he was cast as Floki in the History Channel series Vikings. He played the brilliant and quirky boat builder for the show's entire run until 2020.

After Vikings, he took on other major roles. In 2018, he appeared in the science-fiction series Westworld. In 2020, he played the legendary wizard Merlin in the Netflix series Cursed, which tells a new version of the King Arthur stories.

More recently, he played the scientist Hans Bethe in the award-winning 2023 film Oppenheimer.

Personal Life

From 1999 to 2005, Gustaf Skarsgård was in a relationship with actress Hanna Alström.

He is now in a relationship with Caroline Sjöström. They have a daughter who was born in November 2020.
