Hala Basha-Gorani (/ˈhɑːlə ɡəˈrɑːni/; born March 1, 1970) is an American journalist. She works as a correspondent for NBC News. Before this, she was a news anchor and reporter for CNN International in London. She also reports from war zones.

She used to host a show called Hala Gorani Tonight on CNN. She also co-hosted Your World Today and International Desk from CNN's main office in Atlanta.

In February 2022, Gorani became a special war anchor. She reported live from Lviv, in western Ukraine. This was during the Russian invasion. She reported in the early morning from Ukraine, which was late evening for her American audience.

On April 28, 2022, Gorani announced she was leaving CNN. She presented her last episode of Hala Gorani Tonight that same evening. After leaving CNN, she took a break to write her first book. It is a memoir about identity. The book is called But You Don't Look Arab: And Other Tales of Unbelonging. It was published in February 2024.

Early Life and Education

Hala Gorani was born in 1970 in Seattle, Washington, USA. She has a very international background. Her parents are from Syria and France. She is a U.S. citizen.

Gorani grew up mostly in Paris, France. She also lived in Algeria. Her first name, Hala, is an Arabic word meaning "halo around the moon." She earned a degree in economics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She also graduated from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in Paris in 1995. Because she lived in many countries, Gorani says she feels like a foreigner everywhere.

Hala Gorani speaks three languages fluently: English, French, and Arabic.

Gorani started her career as a reporter for La Voix du Nord. She also worked for Agence France-Presse. In 1994, she joined France 3. After working at Bloomberg Television in London, she joined CNN in 1998. She became an anchor for CNN Today, a European morning show.

She has reported from every country in the Middle East. In 2005, she covered Israel's unilateral disengagement plan from Gaza. In 2006, she reported on the 2006 Lebanon War from Lebanon. This reporting helped CNN win an Edward R. Murrow Award. She also led CNN's coverage of the French presidential elections in 2002 and 2007.

Gorani was part of the CNN team that won a News and Documentary Emmy. This was for their coverage of the 2011 Egyptian revolution. This event led to the removal of President Hosni Mubarak. In 2015, she reported from Paris on the Charlie Hebdo shooting in January. She also covered the ISIS attacks in November.

Gorani also covered the terrible 2010 Haiti earthquake. CNN's reporting on this event won a Golden Nymph award. This is a top honor in international journalism. Gorani often reports from the field on big breaking news stories. She was one of the few journalists allowed into Syria in 2011. She reported on the situation there. Her coverage of the Arab Spring helped CNN win a Peabody Award in 2012.

In 2008, Gorani attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She led the final discussion. Many business and political leaders were there, including Tony Blair.

Gorani used to host Inside the Middle East on CNN International. This monthly show covered important social, political, and cultural issues in the region. She reported on many interesting stories. These included poverty in Bahrain and the lives of artists in Iraq.

Gorani has interviewed many important people. These include Jimmy Carter, Tony Blair, and the Dalai Lama. She keeps her political and religious views private. This helps her stay neutral as a journalist.

In May 2015, George Mason University gave Gorani an honorary doctorate degree. She also gave a speech to the graduating students that year.

From November 13-15, 2015, Gorani was a key part of CNN's team. They covered the terrorist attacks in Paris, France. About 130 people were killed in these attacks.

In 2018, Gorani was nominated for another News and Documentary Emmy. This was for her coverage of the Manchester Concert Attack. That same year, she and her team won an Emmy Award. This was for their report on "Syria: Gasping for Life in Khan Sheikhoun."

In a speech to new graduates, Gorani shared some advice. She said that for a journalist, important moments are when their work makes a difference. She also said that being different is good. These differences make a person memorable. Gorani told students to develop their unique qualities. She said they would find their strength in these differences.

From November 2017 to April 2022, Gorani hosted Hala Gorani Tonight on CNN International. This show aired on weeknights.

Personal Life

Hala Gorani considers Paris her home. Her mother also lives there. From 2004 to 2014, she worked from the CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2014, she moved back to London.

French writer Yann Moix dedicated his first novel to her in 1996.

Gorani married Christian Streib on June 14, 2015. He is a German photojournalist for CNN. Their wedding was in Jardin Majorelle, Morocco.

While researching her book, Gorani learned about her family history. She found out that part of her family came from Abkhazia.
