History of Hales Corners
The land where Hales Corners is today was once claimed by France, then Britain. Later, in 1783, it became part of the Northwest Territory of the United States.
Native American History
The Potawatomi Native American tribe lived on this land for a long time. They were the main tribe in southeast Wisconsin. They had large villages and grew important crops like beans, squash, and corn. The Potawatomi also traded furs. They learned to speak French and English, and some even married Europeans. Sadly, the Potawatomi were forced to leave their land in 1838.
Early Settlers and Naming
In the 1830s and 1840s, more settlers arrived. Many of these new families came from New England. Three families named Hale were among them. The village of Hales Corners got its start in 1837. That's when Seneca Hale claimed land there. The village was named after his brother, William Hale. William became the first Postmaster (the person in charge of the post office) in 1854.
Village Fairs
In the mid-1800s, Hales Corners became known for its monthly fairs. These fairs began when a special plank road was built. This road connected Janesville to Milwaukee and passed right through the village. At first, the fairs were places where people traded horses. Over time, they grew into a market for farmers. They would trade pigs, cattle, and sheep there.
