History of Hamden

The town of Hamden was first created in 1825. It was originally called "Hampden." The name was changed to its current spelling, Hamden, in 1826. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Delhi and Walton.

Did you know that Hamden is famous for an early mention of a baseball game? In 1825, a newspaper called the Delhi Gazette printed a notice. It said that people from Hamden wanted to challenge players from any other town. They wanted to play a game of "Bass-Ball" for one dollar per game. This is one of the first times baseball was mentioned in an American newspaper!

Two important historical places in Hamden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Hamden Covered Bridge and Schoolhouse No. 5. They are protected because of their historical value.

The nearby Town of Delhi helps Hamden with fire and ambulance services. Hamden also has its own small Highway Department. In the town center, you can find a bank and a few small businesses. There is also a gas station and convenience store north of the town center on Route 10.
