History of Hamilton

The area where Hamilton is now was once known as Payne's Corners. The Town of Hamilton was officially created in 1795. This happened before Madison County was even formed! The town was originally part of the Town of Paris in Oneida County. Over time, parts of the original town were used to create other new towns in the county.

An interesting group called the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm was started in Hamilton in 1890. This group is connected to Freemasonry.

Hamilton is located in central New York. The southern border of the town touches Chenango County.

The town covers a total area of about 41.5 square miles (107.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 41.4 square miles (107.1 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.
