History of Hardoi
The early history of Hardoi is not very clear. Some people think the name comes from a group called the Bhar. Others believe it was named after a ruler called Raja Harnakas or a religious person named Hardeo Babar. He supposedly lived around the year 1000.
The area where Hardoi stands has been lived in for a very long time. Under the old town, there is an ancient mound called a khera. This mound covers about 16 acres. Around the year 1300, a group of people led by Nir Singh are said to have taken over the place. They rebuilt the city after destroying an old fort.
At the start of the 1900s, Hardoi had two main parts. There was "old" Hardoi, which was the original village area. Then there was "new" Hardoi, which grew after the British set up their offices in the late 1850s. "New" Hardoi had wide, tree-lined streets. It mostly had homes for government officials and lawyers, along with shops.
Victoria Hall was built in 1888. It held the city and district offices. It also had a public library with books in many languages like English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit. The building also had a clock tower. The city had other important places too, like a courthouse, police station, and schools. Hardoi was not a huge trading center back then. Its main business was collecting grain from nearby villages and sending it out by train.
