Harford is a small town located in Cortland County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 943 people lived there. Harford is in the southwest part of Cortland County, south of the city of Cortland.

History of Harford
Harford was once part of a larger area called "Virgil" in the Central New York Military Tract. The first people started settling here around 1803.
The town of Harford was officially created in 1845. It was formed from a section of the nearby town of Virgil. By 1865, the town's population had grown to 888 people.
In the 1970s, Cornell University bought a lot of land in Harford. They use this land for important livestock research.
Geography of Harford
Harford covers a total area of about 62.6 square kilometers (24.18 square miles). Only a very small part of this, about 0.06 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.
The western border of Harford touches Tompkins County. The southern border is shared with Tioga County.
Roads and Waterways
Several important roads pass through Harford. New York State Route 38 crosses the southwest part of the town. New York State Route 200 meets New York State Route 221 just east of Harford village.
The East Branch of Owego Creek flows south through the town. This creek is part of the Susquehanna River system. In the northwest, water drains into Virgil Creek, which flows into Fall Creek. Fall Creek then goes west to Cayuga Lake in Ithaca. This means some of Harford's water eventually reaches Lake Ontario. Because the northern part of the town has steep hills, most of the larger communities are found in the southern part.
