The History of Haslett, Michigan
Haslett gets its name from James and Sarah Haslett. They started a special camp called Nemoka Spiritualist Camp. This camp was on the shore of Pine Lake, which is now known as Lake Lansing.
In the late 1800s, many people who believed in spiritualism came to Haslett Park. They gathered for meetings, readings, and lectures during the summer. Mr. Haslett hoped his camp would become a major center for the spiritualist movement.
However, Mr. Haslett passed away in 1891. The spiritualist movement also started to become less popular. Because of this, his wife sold the land in 1898 to the Haslett Park Association.
From Spiritual Camp to Amusement Park Fun
The new owners changed the land into a fun summer spot. They added a wooden roller coaster and other carnival rides. This became known as the Lake Lansing Amusement Park.
A railroad was already there, and then a trolley line was added. This allowed people to travel easily from Lansing, the state capital, to the new amusement park.
Today, Haslett continues this tradition of fun and recreation. It is home to Lake Lansing Parks North and South. It also has part of the Inter-Urban Pathway and many other small parks.
