History of Hauterive
The famous Abbey of Hauterive is a very old building in Hauterive. It was started by Cistercians (a type of monk) in 1138.
The abbey closed in 1848 after a conflict called the Sonderbund War. However, it reopened its doors in 1939 and is still active today.
Geography and Landscape
Hauterive covers an area of about 11.9 square kilometers (4.6 square miles). A large part of this land, about 52%, is used for farming. This means there are many fields for crops and pastures for animals.
About 30% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land includes buildings, roads, and some rivers or lakes.
Hauterive includes the villages of Ecuvillens and Posieux. It also has a smaller settlement called Grangeneuve.
Hauterive's Coat of Arms
A coat of arms is a special design that represents a town or family. Hauterive's coat of arms has blue and white stripes. It also shows a golden lion holding a small white cross.
The blue and white stripes come from the old coat of arms of Ecuvillens. The lion and cross come from the old coat of arms of Posieux. This design shows how the two villages came together.

After kindergarten, they attend six years of Primary school. Then, students go to three years of lower Secondary school. In this stage, students are grouped based on their abilities.
After lower Secondary, students can choose to go to an upper Secondary school for three or four years. This can be a gymnasium, which prepares them for university. Or it can be a vocational program, which teaches them skills for a specific job.
After finishing upper Secondary, students can go to a higher education school or start an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is like learning a job by working with an experienced person.
In a recent school year, many students from Hauterive attended schools both in and outside the town. There were kindergarten and primary school classes within Hauterive itself.
