Cottens is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It's part of the Sarine district. While it used to have a German name, Cottingen, people don't use it much anymore.

History of Cottens

Cottens is quite old! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1138. Back then, it was known as Cotens.

Cottens covers an area of about 5 square kilometers (that's about 2 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 70%, is used for farming. About 17% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land, around 12%, has buildings and roads. There are also small areas with rivers and some land that isn't used for anything.

Most of the built-up areas are homes and other buildings, while a smaller part is for roads. The forests in Cottens are mostly dense, thick woods. On the farms, people grow crops, and some land is used for pastures where animals graze. There are also small areas for fruit trees. All the water in Cottens comes from flowing rivers and streams.

Cottens is located in the Sarine district. It's easy to reach because it's on the main road and railway lines that connect the towns of Romont and Fribourg.

Transportation in Cottens

Cottens has its own railway station, called Cottens FR. This station is on the main Lausanne–Bern line. You can catch regular trains from Cottens to Romont FR and Fribourg/Freiburg, making it easy to travel to bigger towns.
