Exploring Hayden Lake's Geography
Hayden Lake is located at 47°45′53″N 116°45′21″W / 47.76472°N 116.75583°W. The city covers a total area of about 2.03 square kilometers (0.78 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
How Hayden Lake Was Formed
Hayden Lake, along with Lake Coeur d'Alene and other lakes in the area, was created by huge floods long ago. These floods are known as the Missoula Floods. They happened between 12,000 and 15,000 years ago.
During these floods, a giant ice sheet from Canada blocked a river, creating a massive lake called Glacial Lake Missoula. When the ice dam broke, huge amounts of water rushed out. This water filled the land with sand, gravel, and rocks. The floods also created natural dams, which then formed the lakes we see today.
A Look at Hayden Lake's History
The Coeur D’Alene tribe lived in this area for a very long time. Their home was centered around what is now Hayden Lake and nearby Lake Coeur d'Alene. They gathered plants like huckleberries, fished, and hunted wildlife.
The first European to visit the area was Father DeSmet. He was a missionary to the Coeur d’Alene Indians. He named the lake Lake DeNuf and wrote down many stories from the local tribe about the lake and its surroundings.
Early 1900s: A Popular Spot
Hayden Lake's natural beauty attracted many wealthy people in the early 1900s. The F. Lewis Clark Mansion was built in 1910. It was the most expensive home in Idaho at that time. Sadly, in 1914, Lewis disappeared mysteriously and was never seen again.
In 1907, the Hayden Lake Country Club became a popular meeting place for many important people, including famous singer Bing Crosby. A new railway made it easy for people to travel from nearby Spokane. The Hayden Lake Country Club opened Idaho's first 18-hole golf course in 1912.
A Place for Peace
From the 1970s until 2001, a group called the Aryan Nations had its headquarters near Hayden Lake. In 2000, a legal case led to the group losing their property. The land was then sold to someone who donated it to North Idaho College. Today, this land is a "peace park," a place for everyone to enjoy.
