Hazel Green is part of the larger Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. In 2020, about 4,105 people lived there. This was an increase from 3,630 people in 2010.

History of Hazel Green

How Hazel Green Got Its Name

Hazel Green was named because of the many hazel bushes that grew along the roads. These bushes had a bright green color, which made the area look very vibrant.

Early Settlers and Growth

In the early 1800s, farmers from Georgia and the Carolinas discovered that the soil in Hazel Green was very rich. This made it a great place for farming, so many of them decided to settle there.

A post office was built in 1819, and soon other businesses like grocery stores and rest stops opened. Hazel Green quickly became a busy community. On June 15, 1821, it officially became a town with about 400 people.

A Crossroads Community

Hazel Green was an important crossroads. Roads connected it to other towns like Athens to the west, Winchester, Tennessee to the northeast, Huntsville to the south, and Nashville to the north. These roads met at what is now the intersection of US Highway 231/431, Joe Quick Road, and West Limestone Road.

Major Events and Recent Growth

On April 3, 1974, a very strong tornado, called an F5 tornado, hit Hazel Green. This was part of a huge tornado outbreak that affected many areas.

Today, Hazel Green is growing very fast. Many new homes and stores are being built because of the increasing number of jobs in nearby Huntsville. Farmland is being replaced by houses and businesses. Because of this growth, people in Hazel Green are talking about becoming an official town again to help manage the changes.
