Hazlehurst was first known as "Walkertown" because the Walker Family lived in the area. The community really started to grow when a railroad line was built from Macon to Brunswick.
The city was officially started around 1880 as a train station, or depot, on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. This depot was first called "Milepost 8." Later, it got the name "Hazlehurst." The community was named after a railroad surveyor named Colonel George Hazlehurst.
In 1891, Hazlehurst became an official town. A courthouse was built in 1907, a year after Jeff Davis County was formed. Interestingly, another city in Mississippi was also named after Colonel Hazlehurst.
