Hephzibah (pronounced 'hep-zih-buh') is a city in southern Richmond County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the larger Augusta metropolitan area. In 2020, about 3,830 people lived here. The name Hephzibah comes from an old book, the Book of Isaiah. It means "My delight is in Her."

Hephzibah's Interesting History
Hephzibah was first called Brothersville. It got this name because three brothers settled close to each other in the area.
How Hephzibah Got Its Name
In October 1860, a Baptist school was started in Brothersville. It was founded by people from Appling. They also started the Hephzibah Baptist Church in 1862. These new religious places became very important in the area. Because of them, the state of Georgia decided to change the town's name to Hephzibah in 1870.
In 1909, a local writer named Walter A. Clark wrote a book about the early days of Hephzibah. It was called A Lost Arcadia - The Story of My Old Community.
City Government Changes
In 1996, the governments of Augusta and Richmond County decided to join together. This created a single, combined government. However, the people living in Hephzibah and nearby Blythe voted to keep their own city governments separate.
Today, some city services in Hephzibah are provided by the combined Augusta-Richmond County government. But Hephzibah still manages its own water, fire, and police services.

Hephzibah is located at 33°18′15″N 82°5′53″W / 33.30417°N 82.09806°W. The city covers a total area of about 50.2 square kilometers (about 19.4 square miles). Only a small part of this area, about 0.17 square kilometers (0.07 square miles), is water.
