Hibiscus Island is a cool neighborhood in Miami Beach, Florida. It's actually a man-made island located in Biscayne Bay. Imagine living on an island that was created just for homes! Hibiscus Island is known for its beautiful houses and is right next to Palm Island. You can get there easily from the mainland using the MacArthur Causeway.

How Hibiscus Island Was Made

Hibiscus Island was created in 1922. The Army Corps of Engineers used a process called dredging. This means they dug up sand and dirt from the bottom of the bay. Then they used this material to build new land. This same work also created Palm Island and Star Island that year.

Life on the Island in the Past

In the 1930s, after a time called the Florida land boom of the 1920s and during the Great Depression, many famous people started to visit. They loved Hibiscus and Palm Island because of the amazing views. From the islands, they could see the city lights of Downtown Miami and Miami Beach.

After World War II, the area grew a lot. In the 1940s and 1950s, a famous place called the Latin Quarter Nightclub opened on Palm and Hibiscus Island. It was owned by Lou Walters, who was the father of journalist Barbara Walters. This club was a popular spot for big-name entertainers.

Famous Performers at the Latin Quarter

Many famous singers and performers came to entertain the crowds. Stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Tony Bennett performed there. They would do three shows every night for tourists and celebrities.

Hibiscus Island Today

Today, Hibiscus Island is home to many large, fancy houses. Some buildings have been turned into apartments and condominiums. Property values here are very high, making it an exclusive place to live. Because it's an island, it's one of the first places where people need to leave when a hurricane is coming.
