Discovering High Ongar

High Ongar is a lovely place with a rich history. It's a quiet village that offers a glimpse into the past with its old buildings and peaceful surroundings.

A Look at High Ongar's Past

The village of High Ongar has been around since the early 1600s. Before that, in the Middle Ages, it was likely just a very small group of houses.

One of the oldest buildings still standing is called Post Office Cottages. It's made of wood and is located right next to the church. This building was built in the late 1500s or early 1600s. It might have originally been the rectory, which is where the local church leader lived. Interestingly, part of it was once used as a "lock-up," which was a small jail for holding people for a short time.

Famous Buildings and Landmarks

High Ongar has several important and historic buildings. Many of these are "listed," meaning they are protected because of their special historical or architectural importance.

St. Mary the Virgin Church

The most famous building in High Ongar is the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin. This church is so important that it's listed as Grade I, which is the highest level of protection for historic buildings in England.

The church itself dates back to the mid-1100s! It was made larger and repaired in the 1800s. A very important person named Thomas Chase lived here in his later years. He was a Lord Chancellor of Ireland, which is a high legal and political position. He was also the head of Balliol College and the leader of Oxford University. He passed away in 1449.

Other Historic Spots

Besides the church, there are other interesting old buildings in High Ongar:

  • High Ongar Primary School: This school was built in 1871.
  • The Forrester's Arms: This building dates back to the late 1700s.
  • Cucina Italiana: This restaurant opened in 2014, but the building itself is much older, from the mid-1600s. It used to be a pub called The Red Lion.
  • Sanuk Thai restaurant: This building is also from the mid-1600s. It was once the Rectory, built in 1767.
  • Blacksmiths' Cottages: Numbers 1, 2, and 3 of these cottages were built in the late 1600s.
