Himesh Jitendra Patel (born 13 October 1990) is a British actor and musician. He first became well known on British television playing Tamwar Masood on the long-running BBC drama series EastEnders from 2007 to 2016. Patel later gained international fame for his lead role in the comedy movie Yesterday (2019). He has also appeared in major movies like Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller Tenet (2020), the comedy Don't Look Up (2021), and the television miniseries Station Eleven (2021), which earned him an Emmy Award nomination.

Family background

Himesh Patel was born on 13 October 1990 in Sawtry, a village in Cambridgeshire, England. His family background has roots in India and East Africa. His parents are Gujarati Hindus. His mother was born in Zambia, and his father was born in Kenya. Growing up, Patel learned to speak both English and Gujarati.

His parents owned and ran a small local newsagent's shop in Cambridgeshire. Patel helped his family with their business from a young age. In fact, he continued doing a regular newspaper delivery route (known as a paper round) until he was 21 years old, even after he started working as a professional television actor.

Schooling and early interest in arts

Patel attended Prince William School in Oundle, Northamptonshire. As a young boy, he loved watching movies and television. He often entertained his family and friends by impersonating his favourite characters.

When Patel was 11 years old, he got his first real taste of acting in a school play titled This Is Your Life, Santa Claus, playing the television host Michael Aspel. His teachers noticed his talent and suggested that he join a local drama club to develop his performance skills.

Patel's professional acting career began in an exciting and unusual way when he was 16 years old. On the exact day he was finishing his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams, his drama agency called to say he had an audition for the famous BBC drama EastEnders.

As soon as his last exam ended, his parents drove him straight to the audition studios. While waiting outside the room after his first reading, a casting assistant noticed him and invited him to read directly for the main casting director. Patel impressed the team and was cast as Tamwar Masood.

His first television appearance aired on 1 October 2007. Tamwar Masood became a popular character known for his quiet personality, dry wit, and intelligence. In 2011, Patel won an award at the Inside Soap Awards for Best Wedding alongside his co-star Meryl Fernandes.
