Salt Marsh at Hoffler Creek

Hoffler Creek is a 2.1-mile (3.4 km) long tidal inlet. This means it's a narrow arm of the sea that connects to a larger body of water, like a river, and its water levels change with the ocean tides. It flows into the James River in Hampton Roads, Virginia. This creek acts as a natural border between the cities of Portsmouth and Suffolk. Its mouth, where it meets the James River, is located between the Nansemond River to the west and Craney Island to the east.

Normally, Hoffler Creek is a calm salt marsh, which is a coastal wetland flooded by tides. However, the creek's environment can change a lot depending on the tide, wind, and rain. For example, in 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused major flooding, sending water into nearby yards. Less severe flooding can happen during Nor'easter storms. These storms often bring strong winds and heavy rain for several days.
