Hornby is a small town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,682 people lived there. The town was named after John Hornby, who owned a lot of land in the area a long time ago. The Town of Hornby is found on the eastern side of Steuben County, just north of the city of Corning.

Hornby's History

The first people to settle in Hornby were Asa and Uriah Nash in 1814. The town of Hornby was officially created in 1826. It was formed from a part of what was then called "Painted Post," which is now known as the Town of Corning.

Later, in 1831, a section of Hornby was used to create the Town of Campbell. In 1842, another part of Hornby was added to the Town of Orange, which is now in Schuyler County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Hornby covers a total area of about 40.9 square miles (105.9 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with only a tiny bit being water.

The northern border of Hornby is shared with Schuyler County. The eastern border of the town touches Chemung County.

New York State Route 414 is an important road that goes through the southeastern part of the town.

Two small streams flow through Hornby. Dry Run passes by the main Hornby village, and Post Creek runs through the southeastern section of the town.
