Corning is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. It is located in the eastern part of the county. The town shares a border with the city of Corning. In 2020, the town had a population of 5,986 people. The town is named after Erastus Corning, who was an important financier (someone who deals with money and investments).

History of Corning

The first settlement in this area began around 1789. It was near what is now the city of Corning. The Town of Corning started as the "Town of Painted Post" in 1796. This was when Steuben County was first created. In 1836, the town's name was changed to "Corning." This was done to honor Erastus Corning, who was a big investor in the local economy. The community of Corning became a village in 1848. Later, in 1890, it became a separate city. The Town of Corning itself was officially formed in 1852.
