Hovland is a small, quiet community in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather a group of homes and businesses. Hovland sits right on Chicago Bay, which is part of the beautiful Lake Superior.
This community is found on the North Shore of the lake. It's about 18 miles northeast of Grand Marais. It's also 16 miles southwest of Grand Portage.
You can reach Hovland using Minnesota Highway 61. Another important road is Cook County Road 16, also known as the Arrowhead Trail.
Hovland is surrounded by nature. It's located inside the Grand Portage State Forest. Until 2004, it was home to a ranger station for the Minnesota Forest Service. Nearby, you can find Judge C. R. Magney State Park and the historic Naniboujou Club Lodge.
History of Hovland
Hovland was first settled in the late 1880s. Most of the early settlers were fishermen from Scandinavia. The community's post office was set up in 1889. It was named Hovland after settler Ole Brunes' original home in Norway. His hometown was called Hoffland.
A Lutheran church group, the Trefoldighets Evangelisk Norsk Lutherske menighet, started in 1909. This group is now known as Trinity Lutheran. Their stone church, which began construction in 1947, is known for its unique design. The name of Hoffland, Nebraska also comes from a similar origin.
