History of Howardville
Howardville was started by Travis B. Howard. He was an important educator and activist in the Bootheel area during the mid-1900s.
Founding the City
Travis Howard graduated from Tuskegee Institute. He believed that owning land was key to helping African Americans escape poverty. This idea came from Booker T. Washington. In the late 1940s, Howard bought about 200 acres (81 hectares) of land. He then sold smaller pieces of this land to black sharecroppers who had lost their homes. Sharecroppers were farmers who worked on land owned by others and paid with a share of their crops. The city officially became "Howardville" in 1953.
Howardville High School
Howardville High School first opened in 1958. It was originally called East Lilbourn High School. After schools in the county became integrated in the late 1960s, it changed. Integrated means students of all races could attend together. The school then operated as a junior high school until 1980. In 2017, the school was considered for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical sites.

Travis Howard was also the father of Major League Baseball player Elston Howard. Elston Howard was a famous baseball player. He was the first black player to join the New York Yankees team.
